September 8: Vitamin D

It may surprise you that research published in the July 2007 New England Journal of Medicine indicates that lack of vitamin D affects not only all of us Minnesotans, but also one billion people worldwide. Why is vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, so important? Three of the many reasons are that vitamin D is critical for bone health, acts as a natural anti-depressant and it lowers the risk of heart disease. This recent study also shows that people deficient in vitamin D, such as those of us living in northern latitudes, are at increased risk for a variety of cancers including colon, breast, ovarian and prostate. Tune in to Dishing Up Nutrition this week to hear biochemist Paul Stitt, author of Vitamin D, Is it the Fountain of Youth? share his expertise on this topic.

In fact, she’s written award-winning books about how the food industry influences nutrition and health. Join us this Saturday to hear special guest Marion Nestle talk about what to eat.

Do you believe current research or outdated theory? Listen to Dishing Up Nutrition as we discuss current research.
