Cathy’s Story - How I Reversed My Pre-Diabetes Diagnosis and Got Off Blood Pressure Meds

Cathy Smith.jpgIn March 2024, I received some news that made me pause: my annual physical showed I was pre-diabetic. I didn’t want to wait and see if things would get worse — I was motivated to take action right away. The only problem? I had no idea where to begin.

Thankfully, my sister stepped in and recommended the Dishing Up Nutrition podcast from Nutritional Weight & Wellness. One episode led to another, and soon I found myself on their website. That’s when I came across the Nutrition 4 Weight Loss Program — and I knew it was the right next step.

Finding the Right Fit with Online Learning

Because I travel for work, I needed something flexible. The online format of the program let me learn at my own pace, so I dedicated my Friday nights to watching the class videos, taking notes, and studying the sample meal plans they provided. Up until then, I truly didn’t understand what a balanced meal or snack looked like. These simple but powerful lessons gave me a new foundation.

Working with a Nutritionist Made All the Difference

Included in the program was a one-on-one consult with a nutritionist. I chose to meet in person with Melanie at the Eagan location. She helped me uncover two important food sensitivities: gluten and dairy. She also designed a personalized supplement plan to support my health goals.

To stay on track, I continued meeting with Melanie monthly. We focused on practical food swaps and healthier alternatives that aligned with my sensitivities. I finally felt supported — and accountable.

The Results? Normal Blood Sugar and a Lot More

Six months later, I went back to my doctor for a follow-up — and my blood sugar levels had returned to normal. My doctor was thrilled, and I was; too.

Soon after, I took a 7-day cruise to Greece and Turkey. It was my first time visiting those countries, so I allowed myself to indulge a bit — enjoying the local food and cocktails. When I got home, I had a nasty cold and a bad case of sugar cravings. That snowballed into several business trips over a five-week stretch, and I started slipping back into unhealthy patterns.

A December session with Melanie helped me reset again. She reminded me that this journey isn’t about perfection — it’s about knowing how to get back on track. I re-committed to the habits I’d learned and shed the pounds I had regained. Even after another vacation and some additional weight fluctuation, I had the tools to stabilize and move forward.

Off My Blood Pressure Meds for the First Time in Nearly a Decade

One of the biggest milestones? I no longer need blood pressure medication. I’d been on prescriptions since 2015, and finding the right combo of meds took years. Unfortunately, the side effects — especially digestive issues and sleep disruptions — were a constant struggle.

Now that I’ve been able to come off those meds, I’ve noticed huge improvements. My digestion is healing, and I can now enjoy small portions of healthy foods I had to give up years ago.

More Energy, Less Stress, Better Health

With everything I’ve learned through Nutritional Weight & Wellness, I feel more confident in my food choices and more in control of my health. I’ve lost over 10 pounds, and by incorporating light daily exercise, I’ve boosted my energy in ways I didn’t think were possible.

If you're wondering if it's too late to change, I’m here to say: it's not. The support, tools, and guidance from the Nutrition 4 Weight Loss program truly changed my life — and I’m incredibly grateful.
