Braised Purple Cabbage

Makes 4 servings | Gluten free and dairy free

Step 1

2 Tbsp butter or other solid fat
1 yellow onion, sliced thin
1 medium apple, sliced thin
2 pound red cabbage, shredded
½ c. apple cider or juice
½-1 c. water, broth, or red wine
½ tsp salt
1-2 bay leaves
Ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Heat a large 12” skillet over medium heat, add the butter and then the onions. Sauté until the onions are soft.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet, and cover with a lid.
  3. Stir occasionally, if the bottom of the skillet becomes dry add more water/broth. Cook until the cabbage is very tender 30-45 minutes.
  4. Season with more salt and ground pepper to taste.


Serve with Wild Rice Meatballs, Braised Beef Short Ribs, or Roasted Chicken.
