I have counted calories and points on diet programs in the past, but that’s just what they were…diets. It gets hard to carry on following those plans because they are diets. I didn’t want to be on a diet for the rest of my life; I wanted to follow a healthy, long-term eating plan. When I heard a radio ad for the Nutrition 4 Weight Loss Program, I thought it sounded good, and I signed up with my friend.
I joined the program wanting to get control of my eating. Food was my comfort and my friend at times, and I felt that I was out of control with it. It’s so amazing that through the classes and my consultation with JoAnn, I now think of food a fuel and it’s been life-changing!
In the classes I learned that I am not weak-willed for having cravings. I learned how to stay on top of my hunger to keep my blood sugar balanced and how important balanced blood sugar is to avoiding cravings. Prior to my appointment with JoAnn, I filled out an extensive health history form. I loved how JoAnn prepared for my appointment. She had read through everything and took notes prior to my coming in. It was impressive how she was able to take different pieces out of the health form and make connections to how I was feeling. After my appointment with her, I felt so empowered. I left with information and tools and said to myself, “I can do this.” I have never felt that way before.
I have lost 25 pounds* so far, and I feel awesome both mentally and physically. Mentally, I’m sharper. Physically, I’m less bloated. I always thought I had a big belly because I was overweight, but after changing my eating, I could tell a huge difference—my tummy bloat started going away. I’m also less gassy. My family has a running joke about how gassy we are. I never thought it was a problem; it was just how my family was. Now I realize it’s related to the foods I was eating. I rarely have gas now and my bowels have stabilized (I no longer alternate between diarrhea and constipation). In addition, I had lower blood pressure and improved cholesterol numbers at a recent physical. Another great improvement has been sleep! I have had insomnia my whole life, struggling to get to sleep each night. I would lay for hours in bed wishing I were asleep. I fall asleep more easily now—especially after eating my favorite bedtime snack of an apple with peanut butter.
A big change for me was to learn how to cook. I never ate real foods prior to taking the Nutrition 4 Weight Loss Program. I would eat microwave meals and prepackaged foods. But now I am motivated to cook because I know how much better I’ll feel. I tell everyone: if I can cook, you can cook!
